Mindful Moments with Your Dachshund: 9 Simple Ways to Slow Down Together

Mindfulness simply means being fully present in the moment, without judgement. Dachshunds are very good at it. They do not check their phones, they do not worry about Monday, and when the sun comes through the window they find the warm spot and stay in it. Spending a few minutes each day doing the same can lower stress for you, calm your dog and bring you closer together. Here are nine easy ways to start.

On the move

  1. Walk slowly. For ten minutes, leave the phone in your pocket. Notice your steps, your dachshund's rhythm and the smells he finds so fascinating. Let him sniff for as long as he likes.
  2. Play with full attention. Whatever the game is, be fully in it. Watch his face, laugh at the zoomies and enjoy the moment.

At home, together

  1. Just watch him. Sit for a few minutes and observe your dachshund without interacting. Notice his breathing, his ears, the way he settles. You will learn a lot about what he needs.
  2. Turn grooming into a ritual. Slow brushing is soothing for both of you. Feel the texture of his coat, the warmth of his body and how he leans into your hand.
  3. Breathe together. Sit quietly beside him and let your breathing slow down. Dogs often relax when we do.
  4. Cuddle on purpose. When he is curled up on you or in his cuddlesack, put everything else down. Feel the warmth, the weight and the heartbeat.

In your daily routine

  1. Create a calm corner. A quiet spot with a soft blanket or bed where you can both sit without distractions. Less noise and clutter help everyone settle.
  2. Start the day together. Five minutes of quiet with your dachshund before the rush begins sets a different tone for the whole day.
  3. End the day gently. A slow stroke and a few quiet minutes as he settles for sleep is the best bedtime ritual we know.

You do not need to do all nine. Pick one that feels easy and try it for a week. Your dachshund will probably be delighted to have your full attention, and may even teach you how to do nothing properly.
